R1150GS Adventure (2001-2005): The First GS Badged "Adventure," and the Bike Behind Long Way Round

BMW launched the R1150GS Adventure as the first GS to carry the Adventure name, and the first time since the 1980s that BMW moved back toward raw adventure riding. It is a heavy-duty, kitted-out version of the R1150GS. Compared with the standard bike it has a bigger tank, taller screen, knobbly tires and raised suspension. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman rode two of them on the 2003 Pan-American Highway run and in 2004 from London to New York, 18,887 miles in all, for Long Way Round. BMW built 17,828 Adventures alongside 58,023 standard R1150GS models, and RiDE magazine named it "Best Traillie" in 2005.

Power comes from the 1,130cc air/oil-cooled flat twin, with a 101 x 70.5mm bore and stroke and a 10.3:1 compression ratio. Claimed output is 85 hp (63 kW) at 6,750 rpm and roughly 98-102 Nm of torque at 5,250 rpm, depending on the source. The gearbox is a 6-speed with shaft final drive. The Adventure has a lower first gear than the standard GS. The front end is BMW's Telelever and the rear is the Paralever swingarm.

The Adventure's tank is a huge 30 litres, with a 22-litre tank offered as an option. Confirmed figures list a 900mm (35.4-inch) seat height and a weight of about 227 kg (501 lbs). MCN's owners rate it 5 out of 5 for reliability, with annual servicing costing around £500, and MCN calls it about as rugged and reliable as motorcycles get. Power is its one soft spot, since the later 110 hp R1200GS overshadowed it.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001-2005 R1150GS Adventure running the way it was built to.
