R 1250 RS/K54 (2019-Onwards): "The Perfect Symbiosis of Travel and Sport"
BMW's own model description doesn't overreach with the RS's positioning: "the perfect symbiosis of travel and sport is what characterises the standard model of the R 1250 RS." Bennetts' own review, comparing it directly against rivals, made the case plainly: "the standard RS is a few hundred quid cheaper than Honda's CB1000R and a full £5k less than the KTM Super Duke GT" — and while the KTM makes more power, Bennetts' reviewer argued the BMW's engine "is (much) better regardless of power figures," backed by conventional shaft drive and a physical key rather than the KTM's keyless system.
Power comes from a 1,254cc air/liquid-cooled flat-twin boxer engine, DOHC with one balance shaft, delivering a claimed 136 hp at 7,750 rpm and 105 lb-ft of torque at 6,250 rpm. The genuine engineering headline across this entire generation is BMW's ShiftCam variable valve timing system — Bennetts' review found it "works brilliantly and is completely unobtrusive," continuously adjusting cam profiles to deliver both a flatter torque spread at low rpm and stronger top-end power, all from the same fundamental boxer architecture shared across the R 1250 GS, GS Adventure, RT, and R model range.
Chassis hardware includes an adjustable 45mm fork up front and BMW's signature Motorrad Paralever single-sided swingarm at the rear, with the WAD strut offering continuously variable, hydraulically adjustable spring preload and rebound damping right at the handwheel — genuinely convenient, tool-free suspension tuning built into the standard equipment. Rider Magazine's own 2023 coverage details the equipment evolution across this platform: a new standard Eco ride mode joined the existing Rain and Road settings that year, with the Premium package layering on Riding Modes Pro, Engine Drag Torque Control, semi-active electronically adjusted suspension, cruise control, and heated grips. Standard electronics throughout the range include ABS, stability control, and hill-start control, backed by full LED lighting and a color TFT display. Seat height sits at 32.3 inches (820mm), with a claimed shaft-drive final drive delivering genuinely low-maintenance long-distance touring capability.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a BMW R 1250 RS (K54) running the way it was built to.
