R 1250 GS Adventure/K51 (2019-2023): "Near the Peak of the Sport-Touring Line," With ShiftCam Doing the Heavy Lifting

WebBikeWorld's own overview doesn't hedge on where this bike sits in BMW's lineup: "the R 1250 GS is at home in the city, in the country, or on a dirt path... a bike that can do it all." The Adventure variant, launched for 2019 as the successor to the R1200GS Adventure, brought BMW's genuinely new ShiftCam variable valve timing technology to the platform for the first time — a real engineering leap Cycle World's own coverage called out immediately at the September 2018 announcement.

Power comes from a 1,254cc liquid-cooled boxer twin, DOHC with variable valve timing via BMW's ShiftCam system, an 102.5mm x 76mm bore and stroke, and a 12.5:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 134-136 hp at 7,750 rpm and roughly 105 lb-ft of torque at 6,250 rpm — a genuine step up from the outgoing R1200GS's 125 hp, achieved specifically through the ShiftCam's ability to shift between two distinct cam profiles depending on load and rpm, delivering both stronger low-end torque and increased top-end power from the same physical engine. Power runs through a 6-speed manual gearbox with BMW's proven shaft final drive.

The Adventure trim's defining hardware carries forward from prior generations: a substantially larger 7.9-gallon (30-litre) fuel tank versus the standard GS, long-travel BMW Telelever front and Paralever rear suspension (optional electronic adjustment), and genuinely adjustable ergonomics — WebBikeWorld's own review notes the handlebar can be raised up to 30mm for comfortable standing while off-road, paired with a wide range of seat heights from 790mm to 910mm depending on seat selection, letting riders of considerably different heights find a genuinely comfortable fit. Braking uses twin floating 305mm front discs with 4-piston radial calipers and a single 276mm rear disc with a double-piston floating caliper, backed by standard ABS. A 6.5-inch color TFT display brings Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, navigation, music, and phone integration, while BMW's adaptive LED headlight delivers wider, more consistent illumination in both low and high beam than a conventional headlight. 2022 pricing started at $20,345 ($24,145 CAD). This generation ran through 2023 before BMW's redesigned R1300GS took over for 2024, bringing a larger 1,300cc engine and a reworked Evo Telelever front end.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2019-2023 R 1250 GS Adventure (K51) running the way it was built to.
