BMW K75 (1987-1996): The “Flying Brick” Three-Cylinder Sport-Tourer

The K75 is BMW’s “Flying Brick,” a three-cylinder spin-off of the four-cylinder K100, which BMW introduced a year after the K100 as a less intimidating, perfectly balanced alternative. About 80 percent of its parts are interchangeable with the K100, and its frame is basically a shortened version of the K100’s, which explains why it’s rigid, if on the heavy side. The family had several versions. The base K75 and the K75 C came with a small handlebar fairing, the K75 S had a sporty frame-mounted half fairing, and the K75 RT was the full touring model (made from 1989), with ABS available on later bikes. They have a single-sided rear swingarm and shaft drive.

The engine is a 740cc, liquid-cooled, horizontal three-cylinder inline DOHC with two valves per cylinder, a 67mm bore, a 70mm stroke and an 11:1 compression ratio. A balancer shaft keeps it smooth, and Bosch LE-Jetronic fuel injection with fuel cutoff on the overrun feeds it, supplemented by a Bosch roller-cell fuel pump. Power is 75 hp (55 kW) at 8,500 rpm and torque is 68 Nm (50 lb-ft) at 6,750 rpm, and the US version makes 68 hp. The gearbox is a 5-speed with a single dry-plate clutch and shaft drive, with ratios of 4.50, 2.96, 2.30, 1.88 and 1.67, and the engine has wet-sump lubrication and electric starting. The top speed is about 121-125 mph.

The frame is a double-downtube design with the engine as a stressed member, with a telescopic fork at the front and a box-section aluminum monolever swingarm at the rear. Brakes are discs on the front and rear. The K75 is about 2,220mm long (87.4 inches) and 850mm wide (the K75 S is 20mm narrower), with a 1,520mm wheelbase, 175mm of ground clearance and a seat height of 810mm, or 760mm on the low-seat model.

The tank holds 21 litres (5.5 US gallons). The standard K75 weighs about 236 kg (520 lbs) wet, and the K75 RT is heavier, at about 239 kg dry and 257 kg wet, with a gross vehicle weight rating of about 450 kg.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a BMW K75 running the way it was built to.
