Sportcity One 125: Aprilia's Compact High-Wheel Commuter, Built Smaller Than Its Predecessors

Aprilia introduced the Sportcity One in 2008 as the more compact new member of its Sportcity family, sold in 50cc and 125cc versions. It is a high-wheel city scooter, and Derbi also sold it as the Rambla. The 125 had a short production run before the Sportcity line ended in 2013.

Power comes from a 124cc air-cooled four-stroke single, with a 56mm x 48mm bore and stroke and a 12:1 compression ratio, fed by a 26mm carburetor. Claimed output is about 10-11 hp (8 kW) at 8,000 rpm and 9 Nm (7 lb-ft) at 7,000 rpm. Drive is automatic, through a V-belt CVT with an automatic centrifugal dry clutch and gear final drive. A US owner of the sister Sportcity 125 noted it needs 92 octane because of the high compression.

The chassis is a single-cradle high-strength steel tube frame with a 32-35mm hydraulic telescopic fork (85mm of travel) and a single rear shock with adjustable spring preload. Brakes are a 220mm stainless steel front disc with a twin-piston floating caliper and a 140mm rear drum. Equipment includes a dual headlight, a small wind deflector, a one-piece dual seat, a right-side exhaust and ten-spoke aluminum wheels.

Confirmed figures list a 76.8-inch (1,950mm) length, a 29.1-inch (740mm) width, a 53.5-inch (1,358mm) wheelbase, a 30.5-inch (775mm) seat height and a 2-gallon (7.5-litre) tank with a 0.4-gallon reserve. The 2009 US-market Sportcity 125 was priced at $2,899.
