ETV 1000 Caponord (2004-2008): The Second-Generation Road-Enduro, with ABS and Stiffer Front Suspension

Aprilia's Caponord is a road-going adventure bike that borrows the engine from its RSV Mille superbike. The first generation launched in 2001, and the second generation arrived in 2004 with anti-lock brakes, stiffer front suspension and new graphics. Motorcyclist's used-bike guide notes that it combines exclusivity, Italian flair and modern design, and that it can take curbs and dirt as well as sweepers. Its used price has dropped to roughly a third of the $12,999 original.

Power comes from the Rotax-built V990, a 998cc liquid-cooled 60-degree V-twin, detuned from the RSV Mille superbike engine. It makes a claimed 98 hp and about 72 lb-ft of torque, with chain final drive. The same engine block appears in the RSV Mille, SL1000 Falco, RST1000 Futura and first-generation Tuono, so many engine parts are shared with those bikes.

The chassis is a superbike-style aluminum twin-spar frame, with a 50mm Marzocchi Enduro fork and a Sachs monoshock on a rising-rate linkage. The Rally Raid version (2003-2004) added adjustable front suspension, lower gearing, aluminum panniers and a center stand.

Confirmed figures list a 1,560mm wheelbase, an 820mm (32.3-inch) seat height, a 25-litre tank, a claimed dry weight of about 215 kg (473 lbs) and a top speed of about 210 km/h. Known maintenance points include overheating connections at the alternator, headlight and fuel pump, and updated ECU software was released to improve rideability. The 2001-2007 ETV 1000 shares nothing useful with the later Caponord 1200, which has a different engine, frame and parts.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2004-2007 Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord running the way it was built to.
