Softail Slim FLS (2017): "Old Iron Attitude" — The Last Year Before Harley's Softail Reinvention

Harley's own dealer copy sums up this bike's whole appeal directly: "the perfect blend of classic, raw bobber style and the power of a High Output Twin Cam 103B engine. A modern ride with unmistakable old-iron attitude. The good old days are right now." Cycle World's own confirmed review calls it exactly what it looks like: a faux rigid swingarm and hidden rear shock combining the raw edge of a bobber with classic cruiser lines, all riding on one of the lowest seat heights of any cruiser at just 23.8 inches unladen.

Power comes from the High Output Twin Cam 103B, a 1,690cc air-cooled V-twin, delivering a claimed 100.3 lb-ft of torque around 3,000 rpm, run through a 6-speed transmission with belt final drive. Harley's own confirmed dimensions list a 3.87-inch bore and 4.374-inch stroke, a 650mm (25.6-inch) unladen seat height, and 115mm (4.5-inch) ground clearance on the standard model.

Standard styling included Hollywood bars, a slim rear wheel, a "cat eye" instrument console, and footboards recalling the early days of custom bobber culture — genuinely period-inspired detailing wrapped around thoroughly modern ABS brakes and a hidden monoshock rear suspension. A higher-output FLSS Softail Slim S variant ran alongside it that year with a larger 1,803cc (110ci) Screamin' Eagle engine in the same blacked-out bobber body. J&L Harley's confirmed spec sheet lists a 5-gallon fuel tank and 706 lbs in running order.

Cycle World's own confirmed 2017 pricing lists $15,099 across five colorways: Vivid Black, Black Denim, Olive Gold, Charcoal Denim/Black Denim, and Iron Red Denim. This 2017 configuration represents the final year of the original dual-shock Softail Slim before Harley renamed the model FLSL and rebuilt it on the new single-shock, Milwaukee-Eight-powered platform for 2018.
