Multistrada 1200 Enduro (2016-2018): Ducati Gives the Multistrada "The Tonka Toy Treatment"
MCN's own review captures the genuine transformation Ducati applied to its road-focused flagship: "Ducati has given its superb Multistrada 1200 the 'Tonka Toy' treatment and created a genuinely competent off-roader. Featuring 60 redesigned components, the 1200 Enduro is a bruiser of a dirt bike to rival the BMW GS, Triumph Explorer and KTM 1190 Adventure. But it still retains its exciting road manners and demolishes big miles in comfort." Bennetts' own retrospective confirms exactly what genuine gap in Ducati's lineup this bike was built to fill: "despite Ducati calling their Multistrada an 'all-roads bike,' the fact of the matter is that with its 17-inch wheels, the Multi has a very definite road-focus where rival adventure bikes such as the BMW GS Adventure can legitimately take to the rough stuff. In 2016 Ducati decide to remedy this wrong and released a rugged version of their big capacity Multistrada – the 1200 Enduro."
Power comes from the Testastretta DVT (variable valve timing), a 1,198cc liquid-cooled 90-degree L-twin, desmodromic with a 106.0mm x 67.9mm bore and stroke and a 12.5:1 compression ratio, fed by Bosch electronic fuel injection, delivering a claimed 160 hp at 9,500 rpm and roughly 100 lb-ft (136 Nm) of torque at 7,500 rpm through a 6-speed transmission with chain final drive and a wet multiplate clutch. Bennetts' own detailed account confirms this bike genuinely shares its fundamental powertrain sophistication with the road-going Multistrada 1200 S it's derived from: "the 1200 Enduro blends the sophisticated road bike tech such as semi-active suspension and the DVT V-twin motor from the Multistrada 1200 with a more rugged chassis and 19-inch front wheel to allow it to take to the rough stuff."
Bikesales.com.au's own launch review confirms the genuine chassis and suspension hardware built specifically for this off-road-focused mission: "48mm Sachs upside-down forks with electronic compression and rebound damping adjustment with Ducati Skyhook Suspension" up front, paired with "a Sachs monoshock with electronic compression and rebound damping adjustment and electronic preload adjustment with Ducati Skyhook suspension" at the rear — genuine semi-active suspension technology tuned for genuine off-road capability, riding on "light alloy spoked" wheels sized 3.0 x 19 inches front and 4.5 x 17 inches rear, a real departure from the standard Multistrada's smaller-diameter cast wheels. That same review's own first-hand testing offers a genuinely candid account of the bike's real-world off-road capability, including a moment that put those claims to the ultimate test: "the day had begun climbing out of our Coffs Harbour base and up to Sealy Lookout on the bitumen. It's tight and twisty and a 60-zone, but even at that pace I could feel the bike wasn't loving it, being as it was in Enduro mode and running Pirelli Scorpion Rally knobbies" — before the reviewer's own account of "lifting a Ducati out of the surf" during that same test day.
MCN's own review confirms the genuinely substantial physical dimensions this off-road mission demanded: "there's no getting away from the fact that this is a big bike. The seat is an inch taller than the standard Multistrada's and the bars 50mm higher. With its big 30-litre fuel tank it's wide, too, so shorter riders will struggle to get both feet down at a standstill, especially off-road. It's a bike for the taller rider, or a confident off-roader." Autoevolution's own detailed technical breakdown confirms the full Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) carried across the range: Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Bosch Cornering ABS, Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), cruise control, Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS), and a ride-by-wire system offering four distinct riding modes — Sport, Touring, Urban, and Enduro. Bennetts' own coverage confirms genuine factory accessory packages offered alongside the base bike: "Touring adds heated grips, Touratech aluminium panniers and a handlebar bag. Sport adds a road-legal Termi exhaust end-can and a few billet trinkets while Urban brings a top box, USB hub and tank bag and Enduro extra LED lights and Touratech crash protection." Braking uses dual 320mm front discs with Brembo four-piston monobloc calipers and a 265mm rear disc, both backed by standard ABS. This exact 2016-2018 generation ran through 2019, when Ducati's updated Multistrada Enduro 1260 took over with the larger-displacement DVT engine shared with the rest of the 1260-badged range.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2016-2018 Multistrada 1200 Enduro running the way it was built to.
