Ninja H2 (2015-Onwards): "It's Impossible" — Until Kawasaki's Own Aerospace Division Proved It Wasn't
Motorcycle.com's own first-ride review captures the genuine engineering leap this bike represents: "when Kawasaki was developing the H2, it sent out specs to various supercharger manufacturers for bids on the project. It turns out that none believed they could do it. Eaton, which provides superchargers for Kawasaki Jet Skis, apparently said, 'It's impossible.'" MCN's own review of the resulting production bike doesn't hold back on the payoff: "the level of finish and quality on the H2 is some of the highest I've ever seen on a production road bike... if you want one of the most exciting road bikes ever built, then step forward, and get in the queue." Unveiled at EICMA in November 2014 as the genuine street-legal sibling to the track-only H2R, Kawasaki's own aerospace division engineered the supercharger system entirely in-house rather than relying on an outside supplier.
Power comes from a 998cc liquid-cooled inline-four, DOHC with 16 valves, a 76.0mm x 55.0mm bore and stroke, and an 8.5:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 200 hp at 11,000 rpm and roughly 98.5-99 lb-ft of torque at 10,500-13,600 rpm through a 6-speed transmission. RevZilla's own launch coverage details the genuine mechanical sophistication of the forced-induction system: "the supercharger system uses planetary gears and spins up to 130,000 rpm as the Ninja H2 approaches its 14,000 rpm redline, which provides 20.5 psi of boost pressure," delivering an engine character Kawasaki itself describes as "similar to having a wide powerband" rather than the abrupt, laggy power delivery some might expect from forced induction. Motorcycle.com's own technical breakdown explains the fundamental engineering choice behind that design: "a supercharger can be a positive-displacement type or a centrifugal unit driven directly from the engine, as opposed to a turbo which is spun by exhaust gases," with the H2's centrifugal impeller driven by a planetary gearset connected straight to the crankshaft, using genuine Kawasaki aerospace technology.
Motorcycle.com's own EICMA preview details the extensive supplementary lubrication built specifically for the supercharger's extreme rotational speeds: "jets spray oil on the supercharger's chain where it meets both the upper and lower sprockets... an additional two air jets cool each cylinder while the transmission also uses oil jets," requiring the H2 to carry 1.3 gallons of oil — roughly 35% more than a typical naturally-aspirated engine of similar displacement. The electronics suite includes Kawasaki Launch Control Mode (KLCM) working alongside Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control (S-KTRC) across nine adjustable settings plus off, Kawasaki Engine Brake Control (KEBC), a quickshifter, the Kawasaki Intelligent Anti-lock Brake System (KIBS), and an Öhlins electronic steering damper. Autoevolution's own coverage of the 2016 update confirms Kawasaki added a genuine assist-and-slipper clutch that year, cutting lever effort by 40% and preventing rear-wheel hop on aggressive downshifts. Braking uses dual 330mm front discs with radial-mount opposed four-piston Brembo calipers and a 250mm rear disc, riding on a steel trellis frame with a single-sided swingarm. Wikipedia's own spec sheet confirms a genuine power bump arrived from 2019 onward, claimed output rising to 240 hp. Fully fueled weight comes in at 527 lbs, and MCN's own review notes a Carbon-bodywork special edition was revealed at Intermot in October 2016, joining the standard Mirror Coated Spark Black colorway across this ongoing production run.
