YZF-R6 (2013-2020): The Final Chapter of a Genuine Supersport Legend

Autoevolution's own account of the 2013 update frames it as the culmination of "countless years of racing history that reached new performance boundaries" — 1000PS's own head-to-head comparison of the 2013 and 2020 models found the R6's racing heritage genuinely inescapable: "it almost seems as if the Yamaha YZF-R6 was born on the race track... whether it's the design, the ergonomics, the braking or the electronic aids — the racing genes are everywhere." This 2013-2020 span represents the final generation of the R6 sold with full street homologation before Yamaha reduced availability to a race-only, non-homologated specification from 2021 onward.

Power comes from a 599cc liquid-cooled inline-four, DOHC with titanium valves and forged pistons for genuinely fast throttle response, delivering a claimed 117-129 hp (figures vary by market and emissions calibration) with a genuinely extreme redline at 16,000 rpm. Yamaha's Chip Controlled Intake and Throttle (YCC-I/YCC-T) systems deliver precise, race-derived power management, with bodywork styling directly inspired by the 2005-era YZR-M1 MotoGP machine. WebBikeWorld's own model overview notes the R6's genuine historical significance predates this generation entirely — it was "the first motorcycle to... [make] over 100 HP at 600cc when it launched in 1999," and even in this later, Euro4-restricted form remained "one of the most powerful of the 600's with 117 HP in 2020" while staying "one of the lightest inline 4 bikes at full wet weight of just 419 lbs."

1000PS's own comparison notes a genuine trade-off that arrived partway through this generation: Euro4 emissions compliance cost the R6 some peak power in later model years compared to the original 2013 launch spec — "it is a pity that the latest version of the R6 has lost some of its power due to Euro 4" — though that same review found it "will be the faster track bike for most of us" regardless, with an open exhaust and race mapping able to recover the lost output for track-only use. Wikipedia's own model history confirms the 2017 update added an OBD-II diagnostic port, a genuine departure from the previous built-in diagnostic mode, requiring an external adapter to retrieve fault codes going forward. Racing success continued throughout this generation across World Supersport, AMA Supersport, British Supersport, and All Japan Road Race Championships, with riders including Josh Herrin and Garrett Gerloff campaigning R6s to national titles. 2020 US pricing started at $12,199 ($14,599 CAD), closing out the R6's run as a fully street-legal, homologated production motorcycle before its shift to race-only status.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2013-2020 YZF-R6 running the way it was built to.
