Thunderbird 1600 (2009-2016): Twice-Named Cycle World's Cruiser of the Year, Built to Take On Harley With a Parallel-Twin

MCN's own review confirms exactly what Triumph was aiming for with this bike: "Triumph's all-new Thunderbird is bravely aimed at taking on Harley in the US, but in terms of spec, quality, performance and price looks the best-equipped rival ever to do just that." Motorcyclespecs.co.za's own confirmed history notes the genuine industry recognition this platform earned right out of the gate: "twice awarded eCruiser of the Year by leading US magazine Cycle World, Triumph's Thunderbird cruiser has been an unbridled success since its introduction in the summer of 2009."

Power comes from a 1,597cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel-twin with a genuine 270-degree crankshaft — Motorcyclespecs.co.za's own account confirms this is "a unique feature in a class of V-twins" — delivering a claimed 85 hp at 4,850 rpm and roughly 108 lb-ft (146 Nm) of torque at 2,750 rpm through a 6-speed transmission with belt final drive. VikingBags' own account confirms the genuine engineering rationale: "Triumph has used the knowledge gained developing class leading sports bikes like the Daytona 675 and Speed Triple to endow the Thunderbird" with genuinely accessible handling for a bike this size.

MCN's own review confirms the chassis was deliberately built to handle better than typical American or Japanese rivals: "keen to produce a cruiser that turned and stopped decently, Triumph has equipped the T-bird with a meaty frame, suspension and brakes (plus optional ABS), carefully-developed tyres and easy handling... on the move the Thunderbird is impressively neutral and brings a level of bend-swinging fun rarely, if ever, seen on American or Japanese rivals." Autoevolution's own confirmed spec sheet lists a 47mm Showa telescopic fork and twin adjustable Showa shocks, braking through dual 310mm floating discs with four-piston Nissin calipers up front and a 310mm disc with a dual-piston Brembo caliper at the rear.

MCN's own owner-collected reviews are consistently enthusiastic: "an amazing ride, reliable, loads of torque and we all have no idea why it was discontinued!" — with one recurring known issue flagged across multiple long-term owners: cam chain tensioner wear. A 22-litre fuel tank and 700mm (27.6-inch) seat height rounded out a genuinely low-slung package for a bike this substantial. This platform expanded from 2016 onward into the larger-displacement Commander and Storm variants sharing the same fundamental engine architecture at 1.7 litres.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2009-2016 Thunderbird 1600 running the way it was built to.
