Night Rod Special VRSCDX (2007-2017): The Blacked-Out Revolution V-Twin Hot Rod

The Night Rod Special is Harley’s blacked-out V-Rod, a hot rod-inspired muscle cruiser built around the liquid-cooled Revolution engine, developed with Porsche. Its fuel tank is under the seat, where it places the rider on top of it, with a faux tank cover up front hiding the airbox. The Special has black finishes, a low seat and mid controls, with straight-shot dual pipes and brushed mufflers with black end caps and shields, and it’s a long, low bike with a 240mm rear tire. The 2007 model was introduced alongside new two-tone black denim and vivid black colors, and the 2017 bike has a re-tuned rear suspension for improved comfort, an electric power accessory connector under the seat, a two-up seat with flip-up fuel fill access, a tachometer and a low fuel countdown feature. The Revolution grew from 1,131cc to 1,247cc in 2008, and ABS became standard for 2017.

The engine is a rubber-mounted, liquid-cooled 60-degree V-twin with DOHC and four valves per cylinder (eight in all). On the 1,247cc engine (2008 on) bore and stroke are about 104-105mm x 72mm, with an 11.3-11.5:1 compression ratio, and Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection with heated O2 sensors feeds it. Claimed output is about 120-125 hp at 8,250 rpm, with about 111-115 Nm (82-85 lb-ft) of torque at 7,000-7,250 rpm, and Harley lists fuel economy of about 48 mpg. The gearbox is a five-speed with a gear primary drive (64/117) and belt final drive.

The chassis has a 34-degree rake and about 5.5-5.6 inches (140mm) of trail on a 67-inch (1,702mm) wheelbase. Brakes are dual front discs and a rear disc, and tires are a Michelin Scorcher 120/70ZR19 at the front and a 240/40R18 at the rear.

The Night Rod Special is about 96 inches (2,440mm) long, 35 inches wide and 41.9 inches (1,065mm) high, with about 4.5 inches (115mm) of ground clearance. Seat height is a low 26.3-26.6 inches (668-675mm). The tank holds 5 gallons (18.9 litres), and engine oil capacity is 5 quarts (4.7 litres) with the filter. The Night Rod Special weighs about 637-643 lbs (289-292 kg) dry and about 666-676 lbs (302-307 kg) wet, with a gross vehicle weight rating of 1,075 lbs.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Night Rod Special VRSCDX running the way it was built to.
