Road King FLHR/FLHRI (2003): The Base Road King in 100th-Anniversary Dress

Harley's own copy calls out the Road King's heritage-rich styling directly: a large Hiawatha headlight and chrome nacelle, a detachable windshield, a large tank-mounted speedometer, a two-piece seat, and fiberglass saddlebags, all built around the vibration-isolated, black-and-chrome Twin Cam 88 engine. Unlike the pricier Classic trim, the standard Road King was sold with a genuine choice: carburetor as FLHR or Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection as FLHRI.

Power comes from the air-cooled Twin Cam 88, a 1,449cc V-twin with a 95.3 x 101.6mm bore and stroke, feeding a 5-speed transmission with belt final drive. Triple-disc brakes and air-adjustable rear touring suspension came standard, and this was Harley's 100th anniversary year, so anniversary paint and badging were available across the range.

Confirmed factory figures list a 93.7-inch overall length, a 27.3-inch laden seat height (29.5 inches unladen), 5.1 inches of ground clearance, a 26-degree rake with 6.2 inches of trail, and a 63.5-inch wheelbase. It rolls on Dunlop Harley-Davidson Series MT90B16 tires at both ends. Fuel capacity is 5.0 gallons including a 1.0-gallon reserve, with the low-fuel warning light triggering at approximately 1.0 gallon remaining on ESPFI models.

Standard extras commonly fitted to this model year include a Smart Security System with a proximity-based, hands-free fob, adjustable passenger floorboards, adjustable highway pegs, a quick-detach windshield with a storage pouch, and a passenger backrest.
