Softail Deuce FXSTD/FXSTDI (2002): "The Most Radically New Harley-Davidson Since the Hydra-Glide"

Harley's own period marketing doesn't hold back on how significant this design was: "the Deuce is the most radically new Harley-Davidson motorcycle since the Hydra-Glide. Every part has been touched. The sleek chrome front end could hang in an art gallery." That's genuine confidence from the factory — the Deuce, introduced in 2000, represented a comprehensive styling reinvention rather than an accessory package layered onto an existing Softail, and by 2002 it had become one of the most visually distinctive models in the entire lineup.

Power comes from the Twin Cam 88B, a rigid-mounted, vibration-isolated 1,449cc air-cooled 45-degree V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and hydraulic self-adjusting lifters, delivering a claimed 67 hp at 5,200 rpm and roughly 78-86 lb-ft of torque at 3,000-3,500 rpm depending on carbureted (FXSTD) or fuel-injected (FXSTDI) configuration, run through a 5-speed transmission with belt final drive. Harley's own copy calls out the driving experience directly: "the Twin Cam 88B engine sends it all down the road in one fluid motion."

Genuinely ground-up styling work runs through every visible surface: a new stretched fuel tank design, an all-new rear fender Harley's own materials call "as original as it is clean," reflector-optic bullet turn signals, chrome front forks, chrome risers paired with low-rise flat-track-style handlebars, and chrome fender supports with hidden mounting hardware for a genuinely clean look. A full-length chrome tank console and a laced front wheel complete the front-end presentation, while the rear runs a 17-inch disc wheel wrapped in a wide 160-section tire — a genuinely different, more aggressive rear stance than most other Softails in Harley's 2002 range. The black powdercoated engine wears chrome covers throughout. Seat height sits at 28.3 inches, with dry weight around 644-645 lbs.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2002 FXSTD/FXSTDI Softail Deuce running the way it was built to.
