Heritage Softail Nostalgia 1995-1996: Evolution Power, "Cow Glide" Heritage

The Nostalgia name traces back to 1993, when Harley marked its 90th anniversary with a numbered, limited-edition run of 2,700 units finished in black-and-white with Holstein cowhide inserts on the seat and saddlebags — the bike that earned the nickname "Cow Glide" or "Moo Glide." By 1995 and 1996, the Nostalgia had moved past that one-off numbered edition into regular production, continuing in Silver over Dark Green with gold pinstriping, though the cowhide-inspired styling cues that made the model famous stuck around in the public's memory of the name.

Underneath, the Nostalgia was essentially a dressed-up Fat Boy: same Softail chassis with shocks hidden beneath the transmission for a hardtail look, the same broad fenders and fat front tire, and the same 80-cubic-inch (1,340cc) air-cooled Evolution V-twin running through a carburetor and 5-speed transmission with belt final drive. The Evolution engine, in production since 1984, was known for running cooler and cleaner than the Shovelhead it replaced while still delivering that classic Harley rumble.

Production of the FLSTN Nostalgia ran for four years total, closing out in 1996 before the model name was retired. Today these bikes are firmly collector territory, sought after both for the Evolution-era riding experience and the distinctive styling history behind the name.

Whether it's a numbered '93 or a later '95/'96 production Nostalgia, this factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams to keep the Evolution engine and Softail chassis running the way Harley built them.
