Heritage Softail Classic 1995-1996: Duo Glide Style Meets Evolution Power

Launched in 1986, the Heritage Softail Classic borrowed its styling straight from the 1958 Duo Glide — a faired headlamp, full-coverage fenders, and a 16-inch front wheel that set it apart from the leaner, chopper-inspired FX Softails sharing the same hidden-shock platform. By 1995 and 1996, the FLSTC had become the definitive factory-built nostalgic tourer in Harley's lineup, wearing the styling of a rigid-frame '50s Harley while riding on a genuinely comfortable Softail chassis underneath.

Power comes from the 80-cubic-inch (1,340cc) air-cooled Evolution V-twin, delivering a claimed 71 lb-ft of torque through a 5-speed transmission and belt final drive. The dressed-up spec sheet includes studded-leather soft saddlebags, a matching studded-leather dual seat, a passenger backrest, and a small windscreen, all set against laced wheels, chrome-accented full fenders, chromed engine covers, and a chromed, staggered shorty dual exhaust. Front and rear tires match at 130/90H-16.

Underneath the retro dressing, the FLSTC ran the same solidly-mounted Evo engine and hidden monoshock rear suspension as the rest of the Softail range — old-school looks with a ride quality the original rigid-frame Harleys never offered. It's this exact formula that made the Heritage Classic name stick around in Harley's lineup for over three decades afterward.

Whether it's a well-preserved garage bike or a Heritage Classic still logging real miles, this factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1995-1996 FLSTC running the way it was built to.
