Suzuki VS700 Intruder (1986-1987): Suzuki’s First Intruder, a Custom-Style V-Twin Cruiser
Suzuki sold the Intruder on its looks, with ads saying no other cruiser looks as custom and no other V-twin sounds this mean. It has chrome on chrome, a classic headlight and 60-spoke wire wheels, with black versions and flat or pullback handlebars on offer. Cast “snowflake” rims were an option on 1985-1987 US bikes. The seat height is about 27 inches. The front brake rotor sits on the left side on 1985-1987 bikes, and later Intruders moved it to the right, which matters for brake and wheel parts.
Power comes from a 699cc liquid-cooled 45-degree V-twin with SOHC and four valves per cylinder (eight in total), Suzuki’s “leanest 45-degree V-twin on the road.” Two 34mm Mikuni CV carburetors feed it, with electronic ignition and electric start. It makes about 55 hp (41 kW) at 7,500 rpm and 55.9 Nm (41.2 lb-ft) of torque at 5,000 rpm. Maintenance-free automatic cam tensioners, a low-maintenance hydraulic clutch, a 5-speed gearbox and a smooth shaft drive complete the drivetrain.
The front suspension is a telescopic air-assisted fork, and the rear has dual coil-spring oil-damped shocks with 5-way adjustable preload. Brakes are a single 280mm front disc and a rear drum, with a 100/90-19 front tire and a 140/90-15 rear. Confirmed figures list a dry weight of about 206 kg (454 lbs) and a 12-litre (3.2 US gallon) tank.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Suzuki VS700 Intruder running the way it was built to.
